Healing the Heart Holistically with Essential Oils

Although Valentine’s Day has passed, caring for the heart remains a central theme in medicine throughout February. In my previous post, I emphasized the importance of redefining cardiovascular health and encouraged a shift toward a more holistic, comprehensive, and individualized approach. Essential oils are my preferred tool for nurturing the heart-brain-nervous system connection within this integrative framework.

Essential oils offer a unique blend of synergistic and multifaceted actions, benefiting emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual wellness. These plant-derived secondary metabolites interact directly with the limbic system, the brain’s emotional center, influencing how we respond to emotional triggers and stress. As a result, they help to positively affect mood, support the nervous system, and promote hormonal health. Their biological effects also can further reduce stress and enhance overall well-being, which supports the physiological balance of the heart and other organs.

Beyond these benefits, essential oils may help “rewire ” the brain, reducing reactivity during challenging social interactions. By fostering emotional connection, essential oils play a meaningful role in supporting heart health. This effect can strengthen relationships and address one of the leading risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality: isolation and perceived loneliness.

In the following sections, I will highlight six of my favorite essential oils for holistic heart care, healthy relationships, and cardiovascular function. For each oil, I will discuss its unique features and the specific ways it supports heart health.

Stay tuned for the upcoming article, where I’ll share my top heart-healthy essential oil blends to further enhance a healthy heart.

All references, studies, and resources mentioned can be found in this accompanying article.

So, let’s get started.

My Top Six Single Essential Oils for Holistic Heart and Brain Support

In this section, I will share my six favorite single essential oils that offer comprehensive support for both heart health and brain function. These oils were chosen for their impressive properties and demonstrated ability to promote emotional balance, reduce stress, and nurture the heart-brain connection. Each essential oil brings its own distinctive strengths to holistic wellness, making them valuable allies in supporting cardiovascular function, fostering healthy relationships, and encouraging overall well-being.

Below, we will explore each oil in detail, highlighting their individual characteristics and the specific ways they contribute to a healthy heart and mind.

1. Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)

Soothing the Mind and Heart

Ylang ylang is a highly alluring essential oil, renowned in the perfume industry for its captivating and enticing aroma. Its romantic fragrance not only elevates social connections but also provides meaningful support for the physical heart. Clinical trials have demonstrated that ylang ylang oil can help balance blood pressure, ease anxiety, and calm the tone of the nervous system.

Supporting a Radiant Glow and Emotional Balance

In addition to its well-known benefits for improving well-being and alleviating stress, ylang ylang is also valued for its ability to support healthy, radiant skin. Its gentle properties make it a helpful choice for alleviating various skin concerns, aiding a glowing complexion.

On an emotional level, ylang ylang oil is a favored ingredient in many essential oil recipes that are specifically crafted to enhance feelings of happiness, promote gratitude, and encourage a strong sense of self-worth. These uplifting qualities make this oil a versatile ally in fostering both external beauty and inner harmony.

2. Sacred Frankincense (Boswellia sacra)

Balancing the Mind and Body with Frankincense

Frankincense stands out as one of my favorite essential oils for supporting both mental and physical balance. Its effectiveness is rooted in its multiple properties and a wide array of uses that make it a versatile choice for holistic wellness.

Boswellia sacra, commonly known as Sacred Frankincense, is a particular species notable for its high pinene content. Pinenes are resiliency-enhancing and stress-relieving phytoncides that promote the body’s defense and repair systems. These compounds have gained attention for their contribution to the positive outcomes of “forest bathing,” a traditional Japanese practice that involves immersing oneself in nature to enhance well-being and vitality.

Benefits for Cardiovascular and Immune Health

Sacred Frankincense possesses unique properties that make it particularly valuable for supporting both cardiovascular and immune health. Through its ability to help decrease inflammation, this essential oil can promote healthier blood flow throughout the body. Additionally, Sacred Frankincense is known to balance immune responses, which may contribute to resilience against external stressors. By lessening feelings of overwhelm, it plays a supportive role in fostering a sense of calm and stability, toning the nervous system and cardiovascular function. These combined effects demonstrate how Sacred Frankincense can be a beneficial addition for those seeking holistic support for both heart and immune system health.

3. Rose Geranium Essential Oil: Hormonal Balance and Heart Health

Easing Tension on the Heart by Balancing Hormones

Essential oils possess a remarkable ability to influence the hormonal-stress-brain axis through their aromatic and bioactive properties. With just a single inhalation, the scent of these aromatics can rapidly alter mood by affecting molecular pathways that govern both endocrine and nervous system functions. This interaction helps to relieve tension, restore biochemical balance, calm the mind, and soothe the heart. As a result, essential oils serve as an ideal complement for any regimen focused on maintaining healthy hormone levels and supporting cardiovascular health.

Rose Geranium Oil for Hormonal Balance

Rose Geranium oil is notable for its powerful ability to help balance hormones. This essential oil is cherished not only for its positive effects on the body but also for the way it beautifies the skin and elevates mood. Its enticing floral fragrance makes it particularly appealing, especially during romantic occasions taking place in February.

Gentle Support Throughout the Female Lifespan

Several small studies have shown that rose geranium oil is gentle, safe, and effective for women at various stages of life. This includes its use during pregnancy, periods of fertility, and for easing symptoms experienced during menopause and perimenopause.

Healthy Hormones and Happy Hearts

In one small clinical trial evaluating ten essential oils—including clary sage, frankincense, geranium, lavender, jasmine absolute, neroli, rose otto, ylang ylang, orange, and Roman chamomile—researchers found that exposure to geranium and rose otto oils led to an increase in salivary estrogen concentrations compared to a control odor. Since declining estrogen levels have been linked to higher risk of CVD, this effect can support the women’s heart while promoting hormone health.

It is important to note that the referenced study involved postmenopausal women, whose estrogen levels are typically in decline. Essential oils work by modulating estrogen to meet the body’s needs, acting differently than estrogen replacement therapies or “estrogenic” compounds. Instead of artificially raising estrogen, oils help restore balance.

4. Rosemary Oil (Rosmarinus officinalis)

Supporting Circulation and Cognitive Function

When the heart is not pumping effectively, the body does not receive adequate oxygenation or circulation, which is vital for optimal physiological function. This insufficient circulation impacts not just the cardiovascular system but affects all areas of the body’s physiology.

Key Actions and Research

Rosemary oil is widely recognized for its ability to boost memory, enhance cognitive performance, and stimulate the nervous system. Due to these properties, rosemary oil has also been used as a supportive measure for low blood pressure.

In a small study involving 20 participants, researchers explored the effects of rosemary oil on autonomic nervous system function. Findings from the human trial confirmed its stimulatory effects, providing evidence that its inhalation influences brain wave activity, autonomic nervous system responses, and mood states. This in turn can bolster circulatory function.

Chemotype Considerations

For those seeking the energizing benefits of rosemary oil, it is important to choose a chemotype that contains higher concentrations of the invigorating compounds of 1,8 cineole and other monoterpenes. However, individuals with high blood pressure may wish to avoid these specific chemotypes and choose the more calming verbenone type.

5. Coriander Oil (Coriandrum sativum)

Key Properties and Actions

I consider coriander oil one of the more underrated essential oils, despite its impressive therapeutic profile. It is frequently overlooked when it comes to addressing stress and supporting heart health. A key component of coriander oil is linalool, the same calming constituent found in lavender, which is well-known for its soothing effects. This shared compound contributes to the oil’s ability to promote relaxation and tranquility. Additionally, coriander oil includes B-sitersterol, a compound that may support healthy cholesterol levels. Together, these constituents highlight coriander oil’s potential benefits for both emotional and cardiovascular well-being.

Therapeutic Benefits

Coriander oil has been described as having aphrodisiac, analgesic (pain-relieving), and antimicrobial properties. Moreover, this oil provides antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, supports digestive health, and helps promote healthy circulatory flow. These qualities make coriander oil a valuable tool for addressing the mind-body factors that can contribute to heart-related concerns.

6. Bergamot Oil (Citrus bergamia)

Key Properties and Actions

Bergamot essential oil (BEO) is highly valued for its capacity to calm both the mind and body. It is one of my most valuable tools in my naturopathic and functional medicine practice for promoting emotional and physiological equilibrium.

The effectiveness of BEO is strongly backed by several significant clinical studies. These studies highlight its role in reducing stress levels, soothing excitement in the cardiovascular system, and regulating nervous system activity, as evidenced by improvements in heart rate variability. Additionally, bergamot oil has demonstrated success in alleviating symptoms of anxiety. All these attributes contribute to its supportive role in achieving better outcomes for heart health.

Clinical Evidence

The extensive research on bergamot essential oil is summarized in a review table that presents seven different studies. Collectively, these findings demonstrate bergamot oil’s multifaceted benefits for emotional and heart health. For further details, the table summarizing these studies can be found here.

FAQS on Essential Oils for Soothing the Heart and Brain

Q1: How do essential oils support both heart health and brain function?

A: Essential oils work through the heart–brain–nervous system connection. When inhaled, their aromatic compounds interact directly with the brain’s emotional center, helping to regulate stress responses, calm the nervous system, improve mood, and support physiological balance. By reducing emotional and physical stress, essential oils can support cardiovascular function and overall heart health. Their biochemical compounds further aid heart physiology directly.

Q2: Why is emotional health considered a key factor in cardiovascular wellness and how do essential oils help?

A: Emotional stress, isolation, anxiety, and perceived loneliness are major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Essential oils can help soften emotional reactivity, promote connection, and foster calmness during social interactions. By supporting emotional resilience and relational well-being, they address an often overlooked yet critical aspect of heart health.

Q3: Can essential oils really influence the brain’s response to stress?

A: Yes. Essential oils contain plant-based secondary metabolites that can influence neurotransmitters, hormones, and nervous system signaling. Over time, consistent use may help “rewire” stress responses, making the brain less reactive to emotional triggers and supporting a calmer, more balanced physiological state.

Q4: Which essential oils are highlighted for holistic heart and brain support?

A: Six single essential oils are known for their emotional, nervous system, and cardiovascular benefits:

  • Ylang Ylang – is calming, mood-lifting, and supportive of blood pressure balance
  • Sacred Frankincense (Boswellia sacra) – enhances stress-resilience and is anti-inflammatory, immune boosting, and grounding
  • Rose Geranium – is hormone-balancing and heart-soothing
  • Rosemary – provides circulatory and cognitive support
  • Coriander – is calming, an antioxidant, and cholesterol-supportive
  • Bergamot – reduces anxiety and regulates the nervous system

Q5: How do essential oils support hormones and heart health, especially for women?

A: Certain essential oils, such as rose geranium, interact with the hormonal–stress–brain axis to promote balance rather than force hormonal change. Research suggests they may help modulate estrogen levels based on the body’s needs, offering gentle support during phases like perimenopause and menopause—times when cardiovascular risk can increase.

Q6: Are all essential oils appropriate for everyone when it comes to heart health?

A: Not necessarily. Some oils, like certain chemotypes of rosemary, are stimulating and may not be ideal for individuals with high blood pressure. Choosing the correct species, chemotype, and method of use is important, and essential oils should always be used thoughtfully within a personalized, integrative health plan.

Q7: How can essential oils be incorporated into a holistic heart-health routine?

A: Essential oils can be used through inhalation, diffusion, or topical application (when properly diluted) as part of daily rituals that support relaxation, emotional connection, stress reduction, and self-care. When combined with lifestyle medicine practices—such as nutrition, movement, sleep, and social connection—they become powerful allies in nurturing both the heart and the mind.
