What a wonderful journey for sustainable health we’ve been on! We’ve focused on taking care of our children and infants with the safest, non-toxic, wellness-enhancing, oil-infused personal care products available. During this time, we have also received great benefits ourselves!

Now that our human needs have been met, we don’t want to forget about our beloved furry and non-human household inhabitants! This is for two very important reasons.

1. We Love Them!

To most people their pets are integral members of their families! In fact, the bonds formed between humans and animals can be intense and provide positive healing benefits for both species. (1,2,3,4,5,6)

In a 2009 article in Canadian Veterinary Journal, researchers reviewed the evidence for these close human-pet ties in relation to their influence on ethics in veterinary medicine. (We don’t want our vet to take advantage of our wallet as we are crying over Ruby’s broken wing!). The authors stated:

Small mammals are the most common type of household pet in North America. Their involvement in peoples’ lives has been shown to have great positive, even healing, influence and to teach children responsibility and empathy (10). In current society, a market for pet cemeteries exists, people leave their pets items in their wills, there is canine health insurance, pet organ transplants, and pet behavioral therapy (4).

A trend has recently been identified in the United States that indicates people are willing to spend more money on their pet’s health (11). When queried as to what was most important when choosing a companion animal veterinarian, price was not ranked first, but rather, reputation and a caring and empathetic attitude were among the most important factors (11).

When our four-legged, fuzzy, or non-human companions are not well, or if our relationship with them clashes, it can cause some negative consequences. Therefore, keeping our pets healthy, with natural and safe products also benefits us.

2. Chemicals Can Hurt Them!

Now that we know that certain chemicals are detrimental to our health, it’s important to realize that many of the toxicology studies were based on animal studies!!

Since Fido and Cuddles are the ones who are licking the polished floors and lying around the deodorized rugs, we want to make sure they aren’t being poisoned!

Veterinary and Human Toxicology states:

Household products include detergents, cleaners and polishes, bleaches, disinfectants and sterilizers, dust removers, antistatics and deodorizers, office materials, removers, and products for clothing. Many of these contain chemicals that present a risk to those who come into contact with them. This contact may be through inhalation or dermal exposure for human adults, or by ingestion for children. Pets are exposed through ingestion, dermal contact, and inhalation. An emerging class of household products is the fabric refreshers, which may pose a hazard to humans and pets. This review explores the major chemicals expected in typical fabric refreshers, “and their potential hazards to household pets.
