Do You Have an Abundance of Cheer This Time of Year?
We are entering into the holiday season, a time when we are preparing to reflect on the year, gather with our kin, and give thanks for all that we have. Yet, the holidays can also be challenging. They may not entail for us the cheerfulness and togetherness of families that are often portrayed on social media and advertisements.
In fact, many Americans have reported they are more stressed than ever. This is due to being over-burdened by a compilation of:
- the chaos of our global environment
- relationship tensions
- mental health struggles
- financial strains
- technology and social media
- the divided, tense political climate
So, in this video blog, I want to provide a different viewpoint on how to think of abundance. By shifting our mindset, we can re-calibrate our emotions to a more positive perspective. To help us access this higher state, we can use essential oils.
Topics include:
- What is abundance?
- How is mindset medicine?
- The four ways essential oils shift mindset
- An essential oil blend to spark the emotion of abundance
As always, all the resources, references, and links to studies and articles can be found in this accompanying post.
So, let’s get started.
What is Abundance?
Merriam Webster defines abundance as:
1: an ample quantity: an abundant amount: profusion
a city that has an abundance of fine restaurants
2: affluence, wealth
a life of abundance
3: relative degree of plentifulness
In the conventional definition, this term mainly is used to reflect material things. However, it can also be a purpose-driven term, such as living a life of spiritual abundance. When we think of abundance in this way, it is accessible to everyone, not just the rich or religious.
Shifting our perspective to feel that we are and have more than enough not only can improve our mood, but it can also have an impact on our health and our life. When we change our minds to access more nurturing thoughts, we are also better able to acknowledge and receive the many blessings in our lives. In fact, we may even experience more of the goodness that was “hidden” to us due to living under such high levels of tension.
Mindset as Medicine
The secular and spiritual realms both believe that “mindset is medicine,” though the methods and explanations differ.
In religious and spiritual texts, it is reported that practicing faith and prayer transforms one’s thoughts and beliefs. This leads to a healing of the devotee’s mental and physical states.
Those who work with biology, psychiatry, and biochemistry refer to this phenomenon as the “placebo effect.” It is based on how one’s positive beliefs that a treatment will work can favorably influence results. In fact, this effect is so powerful that it is used as a control variable in trials.
The placebo usually consists of an inert substance that is masked as the drug, or, the researchers will verbally alter subjects’ expectations of the outcomes. The researchers then determine how much the intervention altered our physiology in comparison to the placebo.
This impact also works in reverse. There is the nocebo effect. This means negative expectations can unfavorably alter responses to a treatment intervention.
For those who suffer with anxiety, depression, or have low self-worth, this information can be scary news. It can seem impossible for them to break free from that negative mind chatter to feel a sense of appreciation or positivity.
It may require getting professional help to heal from trauma and biological support for their brains through natural or medical treatments. One can also aid better emotional balance using mind-body techniques that assist with neuroplasticity and activate mind-body-heart-coherence
Essential oils can be an ally to be used in conjunction with professional support and by individuals. They can aid in healing trauma and help one attain emotional resilience by shifting their mindset.
How Essential Oils Shift Mindset
Emotional Healing
Essential oils can assist with our emotional health through their biochemical properties that impact neurotransmitters, their effect on brain electrical activity, and by forming aromatic-based memory associations to situations or thought patterns. Due to these characteristics, essential oils are used in psychoaromatherapy and as neuroplastic agents to help us shift our mindset, enhance our mood, and heal from trauma and adversity.

Calming Stress
Essential oils can also be used to help relieve the unrelenting stress many of us are experiencing. By inducing relaxation with one sniff, they can help to shift us out of a state of survival into a more receiving frame of mind. This is through their various mechanisms, which include:
- Regulating our hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis (the bidirectional communication from our brain to our endocrine organs)
- Buffering stress at the level of perception
- Balancing hormones
- Lowering cortisol
- Stimulating the vagus nerve
Altering Brain Function
Additionally, essential oils alter how the brain functions. This is based on their ability to:
(1) modulate hormones and brain signaling patterns
(2) shift brain electrical activity
(3) protect the nervous system (neuroprotective)
(4) impact neuroplasticity
Enhancing Mind-Heart Coherence
Finally, these aromatic allies can also be implemented to enhance the heart-coherence techniques from the HeartMath Institute. These practices help one recenter into a state of a higher vibration using research-based protocols.
Essential oils can be used as tools to create a memory-based odor association during the exercise, forming an association of their smell with this calm, loving state. In fact, we can incorporate oils as a supplemental tool to all of our calming integrative modalities to support our mental health.
An Essential Oil Blend for Abundance
Due to how essential oils impact our mindset, specific formulations can be crafted to help one become open to receiving the goodness each day can bring. This can aid in attracting prosperity in all areas: career, finance, relationships, and mind-body-soul wellness.
Due to their multiple properties, essential oils also aid our physical and brain health. For example, they positively influence:
- immune and inflammatory pathways
- digestion
- cellular and neuron protection
- the microbiome and microbial balance
- hormones
- blood sugar
- stress response and vagal tone
- neurocognition
- mood balance
A better functioning brain and body make for a more abundant life!
Now that we know how essential oils influence our mindset, I will review a combination of them that can enhance the feeling of prosperity. The synergy of their aromatic effects is uplifting to the mind, invigorating to the body, and promotes a refreshing and alert state.
The Sweet, Spicy, and Grounding Scents of Wealth
According to Live Science, the prosperous history of the spice trade and commerce has a robust tradition. It led to the discovery of new worlds, wealth, and abundance! In fact, if it weren’t for the desire of nations to find new routes to access spices, we may have a whole different American history!
Therefore, in following with tradition, citrus and spice oils are often prominent players in abundance oil blends. Some prominent sweet-smelling citrus and spice oils include:
- Orange
- Lemon
- Clove
- Cinnamon
- Ginger
One must also be able to feel grounded in themselves to enter into an abundant mindset. The following are examples of essential oils that are found in my favorite abundance blend, along with the spice oils listed above. These aromatic allies help to remove any lingering blocks to worthiness:
- Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) is the “King of Oils” for grounding, immune and neurological support, and balancing the mind-body.
- Patchouli aids in uplifting to the spirit.
- Myrrh has many similar properties to frankincense and opens the mind to greater opportunities.
- Spruce is another oil that can enhance feelings of security. It also relieves stress and has immune boosting properties.
