Shifting Our Focus to a Positive Perspective During Trying Times
In recent years, the tension within our population has been climbing. Our inner stillness continues to be threatened for many reasons that include:
- attention-grabbing headlines of negative news
- controversies over current events
- social media comparisons and associated risks
- broadcasts of global unrest
- political divisions
- technological and AI (Artificial Intelligence) advancements and concerns
- health and financial worries
As a result, children and adults are facing more unprecedented challenges than they have had in previous years. Although every generation may say this, from what was stated above, it’s likely the truest today.
Unless we make a concerted effort to cope effectively with these chronic, excessive stressors, they can have detrimental emotional, mental, and physical health ramifications.
For these reasons, in this video blog, I will share with you some simple, effective holistic solutions to help you successfully deal with these overwhelming factors.
Topics include:
- Details on the concerning link between global turbulence and our nation’s mental health and well-being
- A special-care, research-based focus technique by HeartMath Institute that can help us to maintain our higher vibration and assist with spreading the healing emotions of love and hope to others
- How essential oils can aid our mental health and support our goal to live life from a more positive perspective
- A specific essential oil and oils blend to ignite feelings of joy
As always, all the references, studies, and resources will be available in this accompanying blog.
So, let’s get started.
How Living in a Time of Turbulence Impacts Our Mental Health
The most recent data has shown that America is facing a mental health crisis, especially our youth. In fact, John Hopkins just released a survey reporting that 1 in 10 Americans have been impacted by it. Crisis was defined as times when one’s thoughts, feelings, or behaviors were too much to handle and required prompt assistance.
Notably, due to the ongoing development of children’s brains, kids are at an even higher risk of experiencing these harmful consequences compared to adults. Compiled data from 2025 reports that within the last 30 days, 1 in 3 U.S. high school students stated that their mental health was not good a majority of the time.
Even prior to the pandemic, the numbers of those with psychiatric disorders were on the rise. Now, there seems to be no relief in sight. According to MSN:
In 2025, stress levels in the U.S. are at an all-time high. With election chaos, rising global costs, health concerns, work pressures, and relationship demands, nearly 40% of Americans report experiencing peak stress. A rapidly changing world is making it harder than ever to find balance.
It has become evident that we need a better approach to mental health care, one that integrates supportive mind-body practices. This is not to replace conventional psychiatric care, but to offer the holistic perspective and personalized treatment that is missing in mainstream medicine.
Connecting to Our Heart to Maintain Our Higher Vibration
During these times of change, fostering a sense of calm, inner equilibrium, and making wise decisions can be achieved, but not by conventional means. We need to reach deeper. First, we must refuse to buy into the vitriol and divisions that exist in our world. Then, we must aim to embrace fundamental heart qualities such as care, kindness, compassion, and patience.
HeartMath Institute (HMI) is providing us with heart-coherent techniques that help us to do this by reconnecting to our true selves and back to each other. HMI emphasizes the importance of emotions, relationships, and coherence for physiological and neurological support of our mind-body-heart health and overall well-being. Through their research-based practices, their mission is a global transformation back to the heart. Their website states:
The HeartMath Institute (HMI) researches heart-brain communication and its relationship to managing stress, increasing coherence and deepening our connection to self and others. HMI’s scientists also explore the electrophysiology of intuition and how all things are interconnected.
…Since 1991, the HeartMath Institute has researched and developed reliable, scientifically validated tools and technologies that help people improve their emotional balance, health and performance. HMI also has conducted intriguing research on how the heart’s magnetic field radiates outside the body and can affect other people. (Find out more about their validated research studies here.)
Recently, I received an email from HMI inviting me to participate in a special-care focus every Wednesday in October and November of 2025. The goal of this exercise is to promote a positive transformation of ourselves and the planet by collectively practicing sustaining a higher frequency of love. In this way, we can more easily genuinely practice many life-sustaining qualities. These include:
- the art of neutralizing judgments towards oneself and others
- engaging in compassionate listening, as opposed to reactive responses
- forgiving past situations that continue to drain energy from our mental, emotional, and physical well-being
Below is an excerpt from their website on this technique and how to practice it:
The Special Care Focus Technique: Maintaining Our Higher Vibration
- Center yourself in the heart and breathe love and appreciation for a few minutes to warm your heart.
- Breathe easily and imagine with each breath that you are bringing in Higher Principle and dignity to lift your heart vibration to help release old, stress-generated energies.
- Now radiate unconditional love, kindness, compassion, and stillness into your mental and emotional nature for a minute or two.
- While maintaining inner calmness, ask your heart for guidance, solutions, or deeper understanding regarding any issues or challenges you are experiencing.
- Let’s close by radiating love, kindness, and compassionate care into the planetary energetic field, while seeing more people and nations getting along with each other. Let’s send our deepest compassion to all who are suffering from war, displacement, famine, natural disasters, and other global stressors. See the radiation of our collective heart energy helping to lift the hearts of those suffering hardships.
Amidst the political and societal turbulence, maintaining a higher vibration on both personal and global events can be daunting. But we can use this tool to help us achieve more resilience.
May we all seek to heal with each other, rather than fight among ourselves.
Essential Oils for Aiding Our Mental Health and Enhancing a Positive Outlook in Times of Change
With stress, biochemical cascades shift to survival and the mind remains on heightened alert. If one is chronically “wound up,” it is hard to focus on higher goals and think beyond our own survival and selfish needs.
Essential oils are perhaps most well-known for their ability to induce relaxation and relieve stress instantly, with one sniff. This is through their various mechanisms, which include:
- Regulating our hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis (the bidirectional communication from our brain to our endocrine organs )
- Buffering stress at the level of perception
- Balancing hormones
- Lowering cortisol
- Stimulating the vagus nerve
Incorporating essential oils into our lives can be a means to relieve unrelenting stress and shift us out of survival mode. They can also enhance the effect of the special-care focus by creating a memory-based odor association to access this calm, loving state. In fact, we can use these aromatic allies as a supplemental tool to all of our integrative modalities to support our mental health during these trying times.
I like to use Joyful blend and Ylang Ylang oil for this purpose. These oils can instantly calm the limbic brain, impact the HPA axis to balance brain-hormone communication, and modulate vagal tone. They can also support neuroplasticity in the brain to program better response patterns and reactions.
Joyful blend includes the following oils:
- Bergamot peel oil (Furocoumarin-free) which helps to wipe away anxiety and support the mind-body.
- Ylang ylang flower for balancing the cardiovascular and nervous systems.
- Rose Geranium flower oil for its hormonal and mood balancing properties.
- Lemon peel oil, which has a refreshing scent that invigorates.
- Coriander seed oil to offer digestive support and enhance a positive mind-gut connection.
- Tangerine peel oil for promoting happiness and focus.
- Jasmine oil for balancing the brain’s electrophysiology and calming stress.
- Roman chamomile flower oil to calm the mind and support overall health.
- Palmarosa oil, which aids in general overall wellness enhancement.
- Rose flower oil to inspire romance, connection, joy, and healthy hormones.
You can diffuse ylang ylang oil and/or Joyful blend blend or apply them topically, diluted on your perfume points. You can also inhale Joyful blend or ylang ylang directly from the bottle throughout the day. In this way you can reset your intentions and stimulate your memory-based scent association with your higher vibration state.
