In a study with 60 women with premenstrual syndrome (PMS), clary sage inhalation was found to have an immediate effect on cardiac autonomic function, as evidence by Heart Rate Variability (HRV) measurement.

According to one article review of clary sage oil, it acts as a natural uterotonic, improving and increasing contractions of the uterus during labor. However, it can also act like a stress reliever during this process and can calm the nervous system. This demonstrates its amphoteric, or balancing, properties.
