Dr Borkin is an advocator of transdermal hormonal replacement and saliva testing. I agree that saliva testing is the best measure of free hormones in the blood; it’s more of a functional test rather than a measurement of bound hormones. Unfortunately, NYS doesn’t allow this form of testing for all practitioners.

As most of you know, I am consistently learning new methods and viewpoints on natural and integrative medicine. One of my favorite doctors of natural health is Dr. Christiane Northrup, MD. (If anyone else has read the book, Woman’s Bodies, Woman’s Wisdom, you are aware that you can build your muscle strength and resulting bone density just by lifting the book-her words not mine 🙂).

In the case of “hormone replacement”, I tend to agree more with Dr. Northrup. I feel that even bio-identical hormone replacement is not needed with most women if they are willing to make lifestyle changes and implement some herbal and essential oil supplements. It may be that most practitioners aren’t aware of the power of pharmaceutical grade herbal products and the hormonal regulating effects of therapeutic oils. However, more and more doctors are aware that if you can calm the mind, you can affect the release of stress hormones, which in turn affects the endocrine system.
