It is now estimated that 50% or more of your immune system is located in your digestive tract! So what we eat can really effect how we feel. It is no secret that our food supply isn’t at its optimum. Eating a diet of processed foods and high sugar can cause imbalance in your body’s functioning, not just with digestive disturbances but with chronic colds and sinus issues.

When the body is overwhelmed with sugar, it uses up the good guy fighters in the gut. These good guy bacteria are called probiotics and they are involved in keeping you healthy and they are most abundant in fermented foods. Japanese cultures eat miso, natto, and temph, Chinese eat hot ginger, Russians drink kefir, but most Americans aren’t aware of the benefits of these foods.

This is why it is important to supplement them if you do not regularly consume these foods. For most of my clients, I recommend organic kefir or a high quality yogurt everyday. I myself use Helios organic kefir almost every morning to set my probiotics up for the day. Even those with milk allergies can usually tolerate this high quality fermented version. There are some exceptions to this rule and for those with certain conditions, such as pelvic pain or other problems that your naturopathic doctor would know about, a high quality supplement would be the best option.
