I have “hammered” home about the urgency of making empowered choices for a safer, more sustainable food supply and consumer products. If we are going to change the negative health trajectory we are headed for, the time is now.

In part I of “A Safer and Healthier Summer Recap,” I provided you with a summary that you can use to make decisions for your next healthy steps. Here’s the quick bullet points:

  • Using spicy oils for safer meat on the grill.
  • Avoiding toxic chemicals in sunblock with an essential oil-based, non-chemical sunscreen alternative.
  • The hazards of buggy chemical shields and the benefits of an all-natural, essential oils- infused bug spray
  • Supplementing your immune, digestive, and overall wellness while traveling to your sunny vacation spots.
  • The kickoff of the first month of the “Cleaning Up Your Home and Health in 6 Months.”
  • The urgency of action and the affects on future generations.

I also discussed a recent interview between Dr. Mercola and Philip Howard, Ph.D, author of Concentration and Power in the Food System: Who Controls What We Eat?  This further highlighted how we are heading toward a more poisoned world, but also provided hope on how to turn around to move into a thriving one.

Your Dollar, Your Vote

Although the fact that the health of our food supply is in the hands of a few company monopolies, who don’t have our best interest at heart, is truly terrifying; there’s an empowering message in this conversation as well. It boils down to your very own purchasing power.

By supporting the “good guys,” who uphold ideals that are in alignment with health and well-being, we can prevent their being taken-over by big company monopolies who water down their praiseworthy practices.

From the interview, Howard states:

Beer sales in the U.S., for example, are really leveled off, except for the craft brew segment. We’ve had this dramatic increase in the number of breweries in the U.S., thousands and thousands now.

Their percentage in sales is well over 10 percent. If you just look at the beer aisle in your supermarket, there’s a lot more choice than there was 10 or definitely 20 years ago. One response the big brewers have tried, just in the last few years, is buying up some of those craft breweries.

But the genie is out of the bottle. People have moved away from those macrobrews. They’re not increasing their sales at all — that’s why they’re having to look at other parts of the world for growth.

There are many [other] examples like [that] in other parts of the food system. Heritage breed turkeys, for example. The numbers have gone way up even though in the 2000s, there were less than 2,000 turkeys in the entire U.S. that weren’t broad-breasted white. People are creating more and more of these alternatives. It’s just hard to find them and support them.”

Think of what we can do if we support life-giving products like these and turn up our noses to the “cheaper” alternatives. Companies such as Clif Bar, Bob’s Red Mill, and Eden, have refused corporate buyouts and insisted on staying true to their values! Anyone want a tasty Organic Dark Chocolate Almond Coconut Bar as a treat?

We can also boycott products that may appear a better bargain now, but that we are ultimately “paying for” with destruction of our planet, food supply, and, more concretely, our health care costs. (There’s an app for that!)

The ripple effects of other social, political, economic, and industrial practices has literally been put in the consumers’ hands. We can turn access from food as poison to food as medicine.

“Healthy food is too expensive,” becomes less of an issue when there is more supply and demand! Therefore, those who can pay for organic and healthy choices, are literally creating a world, one dollar at time, that allows a poor child to have the opportunity to enjoy an organic apple over inexpensive, processed Twinkies.

Do we REALLY want to support products that are manufactured with dirty energy and less sustainable practices when essential oils truly start sowing the health from the the very beginning!
