Valerian acts on the central nervous system to create a powerful calming effect. It has been clinically investigated for over 30 years and according to the German Commission E, it has been found to be an effective treatment for restlessness and sleep disturbances. Some studies have even compared the effectiveness of Valerian root to sleep aids. The powerful action of Valerian seems to be due its sesquiterpene constituents. These constituents, which are able to cross the blood brain barrier, oxygenate and nourish the brain tissue. Therefore, using Valerian may help with sleep, nervous indigestion, head pain, restlessness, and tension.
