What Does Being Healthy Mean to You?

The definition of health can range from absence of disease to an obsessive lifestyle of following the “perfect” diet and fitness regime.

To me, the meaning of health incorporates many features that lead to joyful, vibrant living with all people in tune with what will suit their bodies best. When individuals are truly feeling well, they can live life with passion and positively impact everyone lucky enough to witness their delight. This could become a new, social norm that is “contagious.”

I believe that one important way to accomplish this  begins with making our homes a safer space by avoiding unnecessary toxins. The positive impact on our society of placing value in sustainability and chemical-free living is the main reason I started the challenge of “Cleaning up Your Home and Health in 6 Months.

Other aspects to accomplish this description of wellness includes:

  • allowing time for rejuvenation, rest, PLAY, and self-care
  • participating in joyful movement
  • making nurturing lifestyle choices
  • spending time with loved ones and friends
  • enjoying delicious nourishment that fuels the body and all its senses

Life is so much richer when these things are present!

I know personally that is much easier said than done, especially when “being” human is no longer appreciated.

Fall tends to be one of the busiest seasons of transition for “human-doings.” During this time, some of our basic physical, emotional, and spiritual needs can end up on the back-burner. Sometimes this is out of necessity, and sometimes out of an unwanted repetitive habit.

Thankfully, there are wellness tools that can help us fill in the gaps to maintain body and mind balance during times of hurried or unoptimized states. Furthermore, these same supportive supplements can enhance harmony when all are present.

October’s promotions aid us in supporting our bodies when they’ve become a bit run-down from life’s expectations and obligations. Below is a summary of the “rewards” you will receive.

5 Supplements to Support Harmonious Health During the Busyness of the Fall Season

1. Super C™ chewable tablets

Super C™ is a blend of high dose vitamin C (in the form of ascorbic acid), calcium, zinc, manganese, potassium, and a propriety blend of whole food sources of vitamin C and bioflavonoids. Super C Chewable contains a low dose vitamin C and a combination of orange essential oil with a proprietary blend of camu camu, acerola, cherry, and rose hips fruit powder. Both include whole food components, in which additional health effects from nutrient synergy may be optimized.

Vitamin C is one of the most noteworthy supplements for immune support, but it also has additional actions that can benefit a tired-out body. These include its role in the formation of collagen for the skin, as an antioxidant, and as an essential nutrient for certain enzymatic pathways and neurotransmitter formation.

Vitamin C is probably best paired in combination with other minerals or immune supportive nutrients, especially for big immune challenges.  (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)  In a 2006 article, the authors reported the following on the functions of vitamin C and zinc and the impact of both being present for ameliorating symptoms:

Vitamin C concentrations in the plasma and leukocytes rapidly decline during infections and stress. Supplementation of vitamin C was found to improve components of the human immune system such as antimicrobial and natural killer cell activities, lymphocyte proliferation, chemotaxis, and delayed-type hypersensitivity. Vitamin C contributes to maintaining the redox integrity of cells and thereby protects them against reactive oxygen species generated during the respiratory burst and in the inflammatory response. Likewise, zinc undernutrition or deficiency was shown to impair cellular mediators of innate immunity such as phagocytosis, natural killer cell activity, and the generation of oxidative burst. Therefore, both nutrients play important roles in immune function and the modulation of host resistance to infectious agents, reducing the risk, severity, and duration of infectious diseases. This is of special importance in populations in which insufficient intake of these nutrients is prevalent. In the developing world, this is the case in low- and middle-income countries, but also in subpopulations in industrialized countries, e.g. in the elderly. A large number of randomized controlled intervention trials with intakes of up to 1 g of vitamin C and up to 30 mg of zinc are available. These trials document that adequate intakes of vitamin C and zinc ameliorate symptoms and shorten the duration of respiratory tract infections including the common cold. Furthermore, vitamin C and zinc reduce the incidence and improve the outcome of pneumonia, malaria, and diarrhea infections, especially in children in developing countries. (Ann Nutr Metab. 2006;50(2):85-94.)

Due to its popularity, many health care practitioners, including myself, will recommend some vitamin C to help the body optimize wellness in times of physical and emotional stress. Considering the fact that other factors such as alcohol intake, toxins (including smoking), antibiotics, fever, infections, pain killers, and more can deplete vitamin C, many people are likely deficient and could benefit from this additional support. You may want to add Super C Chewable for everyday maintenance and consider a higher dose of Super C™ during greater immune challenges.

Summary

Preferably, we would live in optimal balance and not need outside support. Unfortunately, we live in an environment that is far from being clean and stress-free. Using the right supplements for our bodies can allow us to stay strong and healthy in the sea of sniffles, sneezing, and tissue piles that increase during the fall and winter seasons.

Whether you receive these gifts from your regular ordering, or choose one or two that you feel will fit best into your fall schedule, I hope you all find time to cozy in with your loved ones and enjoy a season as sneeze-free and wide-eyed as possible. This will allow you to rest up for the next transition into the holiday season.
